Uncompensated losses and damaged livelihoods: Restorative and distributional injustices in Brazilian hydropower

The construction of hydroelectric dams is associated with a range social-ecological impacts, including significant changes in the economies rural places where large are built. Dam builders and governments promoting hydropower have implemented compensation programs to redress damages done by projects but there critiques whether they achieve those objectives. In current analysis, we apply an energy justice framework consider impacts Jirau Santo Antonio Madeira River basin Brazilian Amazon. Considering both distributional restorative aspects justice, evaluate how these changed economic livelihoods household income households received that addressed suffered. We find displacement, resettlement or otherwise moving locations because important contributor losses (e.g. changing jobs, lost income) who experienced were not more likely be compensated than others. These occur spite promises dam proponents this infrastructure will increase job opportunities, incomes bring about development.
